Self-publishing can be confusing at times, because there are several business models to follow. Yes, business! When you self-publish, you are operating as a self-employed business owner as an author. This means you can file business taxes as a sole proprietor on a Schedule C income tax form, where you could report all your publishing and marketing expenses and any income you come by through sales or royalties made.

When you’re self-published using Amazon, Draft2Digital, Smashwords, or some other similar company, you have become your own self-publisher. These companies listed then become your printers and distributors. All copyrights belong to you and you are responsible to create your own book cover and the interior formatting of your book along with editing and the eventual outcome of your book product.

Then comes marketing. Once your book is in the marketplace, you will need to promote it, and once that process begins, everyone and their brother will look you up with their method of promoting. Welcome to the book world!

Another approach to self-publishing is working through a self-publishing company. These companies exist to help you streamline the process and provide all the various services required to get your book to the marketplace and offer some marketing tools to aid you along the journey.

Because of all the business expenses that go with self-publishing companies, there is a cost for services. But suitable companies can provide you their experience to help you not waste your money on marketing scheme’s and guide you through a process that can be very confusing.

After working through two self-publishing companies with my first two books, I have moved on to becoming my own self-publishing brand and if I can help someone else along the way, then they are welcome to try what I offer.

Reid Ashbaucher Publications is my brand, where I have developed an author’s publishing agreement along with putting together other online tools that will help keep the process simple. After ten years of self-publishing my own books, I have found that a little help from someone else’s experience without the strings would have been helpful, not to mention saving me a lot of money. So, if I can help you, contact me, even if we never do any business.

Encouragement in the Christian life is important, especially in a world that is fallen and motivated by things that are less desirable.

I end this current dialog with this thought.

Philippians 2:1-4

If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
